The Friends of St. John
The Friends of St John were formed to provide a means for people to be able to donate, or raise money for the Church, all of which would be spent on the Church building, and none of which, would be spent on other projects, or expenses in the Hereford diocese.
The Friends are a registered charity, and the constitution states :-
The purpose of the Friends is to restore, preserve, repair and maintain the fabric of the building, its fixtures, fittings and the graveyard.
The Friends have no religious or ecclesiastical bias and is supported by members of all faiths, and creeds regardless of religious denomination.
The Friends are not concerned with ecclesiastical or religious matters and are concerned only with the structure of the building.
“The objective of the Friends shall be to maintain, repair, restore, preserve, improve, beautify and reconstruct for the benefit of the public the fabric of the building of the Church of St John’s its monuments, fixtures, stained glass, its churchyard and graveyard.”
The Friends are not in competition with the PCC, or any other church fund raising. We are in fact actively supported by the PCC, the Vicar and the Diocese.
The history of the church with its 13th Century knave, chancel and south aisle, witnesses a chequered career. From 1175 when it was given to the monks from Wenlock Abbey, passing to the Roman Catholics with whom it remained for 125 years until its return to the Church of England in 1862.
The Friends are entirely non profit making.
The Friends are administered by five Trustees who live within the Parish, who are not remunerated, and are elected annually at the AGM.
The present Trustees are :-
D. Lowe – 712368
H. Groves – 712466
P. Severn – 712231
M. Smith – 712394
M. Griffiths – 712624
It is important that the Friends are actively promoted so that as many people are aware of us as possible – please show this to any of your friends.
Join us by donating £10 (or more) – £5 oap/student.
